Sensory theatre & Black creatives. THREAD:
Over the last month I’ve been looking inwardly as well as outwardly, reflecting on the very obvious & long overdue systemic change that needs to happen within our industry. I’m not the first to think this, I imagine I won’t be the last.
The sensory sector is a small but fast growing part of the theatre world, one that I have the pleasure to work and create in.
But for a long while now (4 years actually) I’ve sat in conferences and rooms full of just white faces, majority of the time mine being the only “bame” (new term pls) face (hidden in plain sight) there. Or perhaps 1 or 2 other people alongside me.
For a long while I’ve been too worried about what might happen if I spoke up on the matter, being young, female, only just getting started in my career, blah blah blah, but I realised these are all excuses for myself.
Especially being white assumed there’s huge privilege in that. No more excuses. Plus, it’s more damaging for everyone, including myself, to stay quiet.
I put together an open letter to the sensory sector, a small sector amongst many, that most certainly needs to begin to evaluate its own role in the equity of its creatives. The open letter is available to read here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1X4XtFmHDAD3KATbvC76SLqqHAr1rFWfQ9Hz10alUWx4/mobilebasic
the letter is from me and only me based on my experiences.
I’m also in the process of setting up a mentoring scheme for these creatives to work with, get advice and support from various individuals and organisations working in the sensory sector.
It’s vital to me that this has longevity, I refuse to have it be another training opportunity that amounts to... nothing. All the training and skills... for what?
The arts world is in a very uncertain place right now - but I am hopeful. If you can donate, please do. And donations in every sense of the word, time, training, money, support, words of affirmation, energy - whatever you can. #SensoryTheatre #Theatre #Arts #MultiSensoryTheatre
Make change in whatever way you can, even if it feels small. Nothing is small.
