As "traffic displacement" concerns are featuring heavily as more Low Traffic Neighbourhoods are being implemented, worth sharing this research on what happened to motor traffic levels after the implementation of the Walthamstow Village scheme https://enjoywalthamforest.co.uk/work-in-your-area/walthamstow-village/comparison-of-vehicle-numbers-before-and-after-the-scheme-and-during-the-trial/
Motor traffic volumes fell in total by 56% on 12 monitored streets within the scheme boundary - nearly *15,000* fewer daily motor vehicle journeys on these roads
Did these 15,000 motor vehicles all displace onto the roads that surround the filtering scheme? Nope. About 4,000 extra motor vehicles counted on the "boundary" roads
Now obviously if you live on Lea Bridge Road, an extra ~1,500 motor vehicles a day isn't great. But the answer to that 10% increase shouldn't be to jettison entirely a scheme that has massively reduced motor traffic levels overall
Finally, the *really* interesting thing is that latest DfT counts suggest that motor traffic levels at this count point on Lea Bridge Road are at around 14,000 vehicles per day - i.e. *lower* than motor traffic levels before the filtering went in!
