Earlier today, a person using my sister in law's Whatsapp profile pic and name but under a different number made contact with me. They wanted to EFT some money to me, which I had to return to them by ewallet. The reason they couldn't call was because their speaker was damaged...
They went on to send me the tick showing that the transfer was done (not showing any other information about the payment) and sent a text message displaying how much was transferred. They encouraged me to use the details to withdraw R1500 from a Nedbank account and then send back
I told them I was on a deadline and asked how the phone had been damaged (specifically because it was working perfectly when she called last week - I didn't say this though). They ignored the question and confirmed the money had been transferred...
I said it hadn't reflected yet to which they responded with instructions as to how to access the money they "sent me" . I then told them that I wasn't planning to leave the house today and I would get to the bank asap. The next thing, they start deleting all their messages. #scam
I'm not sure how they accessed her name or profile pic especially since they used an SA number and she is in the UK. I feel like I should warn others because I imagine they tried more than just me on her contact list, but I'm not sure of which approach to take.
