1/14)PM Imran Khan visited Gilgit to review progress on Diamer Bhasha Dam.
PTI Govt's priority is to focus on water conservation, cheap & clean hydro-electricity instead of Thermal energy.

A thread on Basha Dam and other Hydel Projects in Pakistan.
#BhashaDamWillStrengthenPak
2/14)The total Hydel Capacity of WAPDA and Hydel IPPs was 8713 MW in 2018. While the total capacity of the country was 35979 MW. Most of the power projects done by previous govt were thermal which is
i) Expensive than hydel
ii) Non-environment friendly
iii) Needed fuel imports
3/14)Hydel's share in Pakistan's electricity generation was 25%. Pakistan imports around $2.5 to $3 billion worth fuel for electricity generation from thermal resources which is more than 60% of the generation and its cost per unit is appox Rs 12-13 compared to Rs 3-4 from Hydel.
4/14)Basha Dam

To be completed by 2028-29

Total Cost of Project = Rs 1400B

Total Installed Capacity = 4500MW

Annual Generation = 18 billion units (18,100 GWh)

Reservoir’s Storage Capacity
Gross = 8.1MAF
Usage= 6.4MAF

New Jobs = 16500 jobs

Will Irrigate = 30-45 million acre
5/14) Life of Basha Dam is 100 years while its construction will increase the life of Tarbela dam by 35 years by sharing the burden. The water storage capacity in the country will increase from 30 to 48 days.

Mohmand Dam

Total Cost of Project: Rs 309B

Capacity: 800 MW

New Jobs: 6000

Will irrigate: 160,000 acre land in its surroundings and 16,000 acre new land.

250 million gallon water daily for Peshawar, will mitigate floods experiences in Nowshera & Swat valleys.
7/14)
Dasu Hydropower Project Phase 1

Capacity: 2160MW

Total Cost of Project: Rs 510 billion

To be completed by: 2023

New jobs: 8000
8/14)The direct benefits of hydro power from Diamer Basha, Mohmand and Dasu will be 32 billion units (32000 GWh) of electricity annually, more than the total generation capacity of WAPDA developed since 1958 to 2018 was 26.9 billion units (26951 GWh).

9/14)Tarbela Dam Extension 5

Generation Capacity: 1410 MW

Annual Generation: 1.8 Billion Units (1810 GWh)

Total Cost of Project: Rs 82 billion

To be completed in 48 months by 2022-23 approx.
10/14)
Two big IPP Hydel Power Projects with $3.8B investment & 1800MW generation capacity.

Azad Pattan Hydropower Project
Investment: $1.4 Billion
Jobs: 3000
Capacity: 700MW

Kohala Hydropower Project
Investment: $2.4 Billion
Jobs: 5000
Capacity: 1100 MW

11/14)Similarly Govt is working on Sindh Barrage which will store 2 million acre-ft water to release it into Indus Delta for limiting sea water intrusion, controlling land erosion and benefitting mangroves and aquatic/marine life.
12/14)PTI Govt is also working on small dams specially in Balochistan, a total of 97 hydel power & water sector projected with an estimated cost of Rs 2500 billion are under progress plus the $3.8B IPP investment.
Rs 183 billion will be spent on these projects just this year.
13/14)Giving approvals on paper, making PC-1s which are revised several times is the easy task in Pakistan. What matters is continuing abandoned projects or projects only on paper, allocating budget & execution instead of doing new projects just so you can have your Govt's stamp.
14/14)Thermal projects can be completed within 5 years which is why previous govts prioritised them. Hydel projects take 5-10 years so PTI Govt won't be able to cut ribbons of all these projects in this tenure but they are investing in future of Pakistan.
