/? #ProjectLamport Mark Hemmant: First plot is winter wheat with delayed sowing, £130 of grassweed chemistry, stacked residuals & we’ve not controlled blackgrass. Weed burden is high so a lot remains.
/? #ProjectLamport Niall Atkinson: This plot was left bare after cultivating with nothing growing but blackgrass. We’ve had a lot of standing water so the soil loosening we did in autumn has washed together & sealed the surface.
/? #ProjectLamport Niall: When we direct drilled after spraying off the stale seedbed there was a lot of soil movement as there was nothing to hold it together. Still have blackgrass – 125 heads p/m2.
/? #ProjectLamport Niall: This is system 3 which had a black oat & phacelia cover crop sown at low density to allow blackgrass to grow through. Black oats really root down helping with water infiltration.
#ProjectLamport Niall: It’s important to destruct cover crops early, ideally pre-Christmas. Allows cover crop to die down so we capture any shaded blackgrass before drilling.
