Our ‘Romantic Movements’ module engages in cutting edge approaches to Romanticism, including decolonizing the discipline, thinking about affect, and remediation. You will engage with new critical theories and demonstrate how they impact your close reading of Romantic texts. /2
'Victorian Decades’ explores the historical changes that produced some of the best loved & lesser-known texts of the age. It ranges from the ‘Hungry 40s’ to the sensational fiction of the 1860s & the Gothic terror of the fin de siècle. /3
‘Entertaining The Victorians’ explores the history of 19thC popular culture, including music hall, magazines, jokes, sport, & nightlife. As well as discovering what the Victorians did for fun, you’ll learn how to research the period using cutting-edge digital tools & archives. /4
We’re particularly excited about our ‘Working on the Nineteenth Century’ module. Students will have the opportunity to apply their skills outside of the university by collaborating with local museums, schools, charities, & heritage organisations. /5
Our Research Skills module is designed to equip you with the practical and theoretical tools needed to explore the history, literature, and culture of the nineteenth century. In the process, we’ll explore some thought-provoking case studies and texts from the period. /6
Our dissertation module gives you the opportunity to choose a specific aspect of the nineteenth century and study it in depth. You’ll be supported by one of our expert academics, including folks like @DigiVictorian, @VictorianMasculinity, and @DrBeard79. /7
We’re planning to run the main degree sessions on a single afternoon/evening each week. Part time students can attend either the evening or afternoon sessions and do the degree over two years. /8
The degree will prepare students for studying a PhD on the nineteenth century, but it’s also designed for people who want to explore the period as teachers, heritage workers, or within a wide range of other professions. /9
We can’t wait to get started! If you’d like to know more about the degree, feel free to get in touch with us anytime here on twitter, by email, or by attending an open day. /10
