Sorry to drag on pt 2 but de school’s podcast was 2 hrs of management saying they felt like shit and were uncomfortable. The moderator was pushing hard for concrete action and at the end they said they would get rid of the security team they contract... but even this was hesitant https://twitter.com/jo_kali/status/1283111524379369472">https://twitter.com/jo_kali/s...
And it came AFTER hearing there are multiple REPORTED INCIDENTS of security finding drugs on people and saying in return for sexual favors they won’t call the police. We then learn other staff members have been proposing changes and even creating their own security...
But management never mentioned it, it was acknowledged. Was it taken seriously or just something to discuss in meetings to pass the time?
The Black womxn mentioned in this post, who offered de school necessary help, asked during the podcast why they had never received any follow up, why they hadn’t been reached out to. Apparently de school were scared.
The HR manager and programmer both said they won’t step down but would be open to sharing their jobs. So the Black, and largely queer, community have come together to “solve” the racism and violence at de school, and then the same cis white mgmt will be staying put.
This thread is largely as a log for my reference but I also want people to be aware of the goings on without having to listen to that for 2 hours.
They suggested a works council, but didn’t have any concrete actions or answers about how this would work... it would apparently be people from “the community” to democratise decisions.
An artists early on asked de school about their position in Amsterdam west, a largely Moroccan area, and how they feel having none of that represented in their office, their dance floor, behind the decks, in the rented workshops, etc etc
The artist asked as a lot of the €€ subsidies and government €€ support for de school comes because their plans outright say they are there for the local community. They tick boxes.
The programmer said something I (think I?) respect: perhaps they should just have written that they are a techno club in the application, nothing more, nothing less.
(“Stand in your truth” @_Axm3d always says!)
(“Stand in your truth” @_Axm3d always says!)
We can all tick boxes on application forms, use the words diversity, engage community, create jobs, bring in money clout culture...it’s a mix of the nativity of de school to think they would do this without actually trying, and the responsibility of the funding bodies.
Closing isn’t an option, Anu articulates it better than I could. Instead de school really needs to shift its power to others, not “democratise but keep the same people in the same positions”, it needs these people to step down. https://twitter.com/noanunoparty/status/1283028051543183368">https://twitter.com/noanunopa...
It’s the same old pattern, queer Black people putting in the work and then a handful of white people get a personal education and coddled into an even safer position. Can we please stop repeating this?
