So now that I (happily) sold my 🧠 to my 1st FT job will def miss being ‘the intern’. Not the sexy 💸 but the constant ‘learning mode’ I was allowed to be in. Tried to summarize some 🔑learnings below. Anyhow, go create your own 🧪 & don’t get trapped in a 🎞 too early on!
🤵Generic advice is often incomplete, sometimes even flawed (same goes for this thread). Only when you understand ur natural place on a given scale (eg. confidence, openness, etc.) u can tailor advice the way it will help you most. So go 1 step further with any feedback you get.
🏃‍♀️ Actively inhaling feedback + quick, constant improvements are worth more than being very good from day 1. Because there will always be things that u will suck at. Thus, continuously training for self-awareness, discipline and humbleness will prepare u well in long-term
🚴‍♀️ Quality of work (naturally complex but easy-to-digest output) is the single most important determinant - although mostly a pre-requisite. Proactivity and smart determination/ perseverance can make the difference between being very good and being great.
👼 Follow people, not jobs. Finding the right mentor will be difficult bc the best already reached full capacity. A hack is to subtly become right hand/EA. Once you find him/her, they will not only make ur learning curve uncomfortably steep but also act as your trust certificate
🧘Politics&hierarchies exist no matter where u go, so learn how to handle them. Know when to escalate/drop a fight. Try asking yourself: will it truly make a difference tomorrow? Depending on where u are on the perseverance scale the answer is Yes/No more often than u think
🎰 Luck is a huge part of the game. You better be prepared when it hits you. Handful of crucial moments can determine ur path. The tricky part is that you often become aware of those that propel you to the next level (good prep) but not those that make you stagnate (bad prep)
🤓 While experience makes ur life so much easier, there are enough ways to compensate when ur young & inexperienced. An easy way is to read more than anybody else & apply it when it makes sense. You’ll be surprised how much awesome content u find online, even on Twitter.
🦥Force urself to be the most humble version of yourself + never loose that with growing success. If u have the mindset of being the dumbest in the room, you will absorb most. When blaming ur successes on luck, people will know ur smart. If u take credits, they will credit luck.
👀 Don’t try and reinvent the wheel. For any given problem or idea, there will be people that have attempted it before, probably even in ur close proximity. People are the single most knowledgeable and efficient source of information.
🕺🏼 Life is short, so man just have fun. This sounds stupid coming from a 22y old. But the last years went by like a flash. And I wanted to use my favorite emoji, couldn’t come up with a better use case...
Finally, thanks to @OliverWyman @Bloomberg @AntlerGlobal @McKinsey @BCG @creandum for allowing me to be the 🤓 & 👻 when I was around
