back on the smash discourse ive been bitching about: yeah the games online atrocious and it is effectively playing a completely different game and it wouldn& #39;t be as bad if it weren& #39;t for how the engine choices were the way they were
everyone plays by a flowchart instead of feel and because of online people are able to find characters with frame advantage and use them regardless if it makes the game fun or not and fill up all the online with them regardless of rank/gsp
the thing is with ultimate its very similar to SFV in the fact that it literally teaches people patterns instead of creativity
again the creativity is there its not like this game has bastardized the format but again you find a method that works rinse repeat you generally speaking are confined to rock paper scissors of like 3 moves for most characters
what made me enjoy smash is that it gives the player an insane amount of creativity not only with offense but defense but the game actively seems to hate players that wanna get creative with defense and makes it harder to get sick punishes from waiting instead of whoring damage
and a big reason why i chose my 2 mains was because they effectively are characters that make people have to actually fucking move and try new things instead of use the same exact proven formula which is fun but its also like
I shouldn& #39;t have to cater every single decision around specific character archetypes like "ok this is a heavy so that means im going to have to rely specifically on like maybe 2 or 3 move choices as ways to actually get in because it reduces my urge to be creative
the game feels like a room floor full of legos with blank spots if you dont step on the blank spot you might have a lego shoved into your foot and it makes it less fun but its not all the games fault that is the nature of playing games competitively in the first place too
but the problem is matches, character and engine choices still feel like they are made specifically so the longevity of the game is based off of people watching content and participating in streams/vids etc.
theres an entire genre called "can i get into elite with x character" when in reality the answer should unequivocally be yes you can learn the game learn your tech and play but the fact of the matter is there has been little concessions when it comes to fixing online and
it makes people play with flowcharts and when I play against them with their flowchart and it doesn& #39;t work because I play creatively (as in not rely on the same frame advantage over and over with a specific character out of a pool of 20 or so viable online ones)
i think for future entries we definitely need a reduced roster. there& #39;s still plenty of love in this game but there isn& #39;t enough upkeep to prevent people from just playing it like a flowchart instead of having fun and being creative
and for something like "hey lets have every character and have online with custom rules and lets make this the most entertaining game in terms of watchability" to work you need to have a constant dialogue with your fans about things which has yet to happen enough
also gsp literally convinces people that they can farm their way into greatness which is bad for entertaining games and streams/vids anyway because it defeats the point of having so many characters with hundreds of different variables
like the fact that i can boot up any character and face someone online and their approach will be the same 99% of the time says a lot about it.

also for the record i still love and enjoy this game but to not say that its choices are archaic is a lie
