Real estate nerd rewind. This is going to be a long one. Havent written in a while, so I guess like any bad writer I have to find the plot. Spring 2016 wrote out some themes and then tried to publish essays for each thread: The conversations the real estate industry isn’t having
I actually changed the title a few weeks later to "The conversations" and allowed myself to get mindfked into believing that - yes it was having these convos, and I just wasn't paying attention. Almost five years later everyone one of these items is unresolved and I know better
So, instead of writing a blog I'm going to unroll it in a thread. It's kind of like not going to the gym but at least going for a walk. But its also the right platform at the moment. This is what I do the best, so lurk or reply or unfollow love you, but show this thread
Let me start by saying that op-eds are a nuanced form both revered and abhorred. I wrote a lot of I'm about to share and comment on before stepping into the role I've held the last four years working in brokerage operations. Also, dont read it if you dont want to! Summizing here
These are the topics I covered with links to what I wrote and my current state of mind on the issues

1. How can we hire a more diverse workforce?
2. When will we stop shunning renters?
3. Who will implement security for transaction documents?
4. The methods used to grant access to property are unsafe and archaic
5. Real estate professionals lack sufficient knowledge about the digital real estate advertising landscape
Here is the parent blog. In this thread I'll keep it short with one tweet per topic for my updated thoughts. But go here if you're following along like a choose your own adventure book and follow along friend. Links per topic too if I did it https://nextinhousing.com/the-conversations-the-real-estate-industry-isn-t-having-5d77ba23fb
1. Where to start? The leaderboards of powerful people still have the same composition. White consultancies are prepped to profit from diversity training. Black Realtors are in high demand now though, so long as their labor is free or they stand in the middle of the group photo.
2. Attended a landlord forum hosted for Realtors in early April and witnessed what I'll just call an overwhelming sense of entitlement to rent monies despite pandemic. Not only do Realtors often own rental property, many have landlords as clients. How did/how are they acting now?
3. This is part of a larger tech ecosystem poison in the industry, but agent are still using disparate systems and signing contracts is just plain dumb and inelegant overall. No security on devices. Add to that data sharing concerns with Dotloop and yeah this is still and issue.
4. This one is tough to talk about. I love the people in the field who do real estate work and we've had a few more years of violent attacks. States mismanaged essential services and real estate agents in most states were left without any leadership about how to act.
5. I love so many of the vendors in the space. But that love does not transcend my desire to serve the people I work for every day or the public. There is too much bloat in the ecosytem. We don't care about your adtech. We just need our awesome people to fulfill deals thanks.
So there you go. A few thoughts I had a long time ago with a few characters about what Im thinking now. I'll share more about what I think, but dear reader, who got to the bottom of the thread - what do you think? Can't always write because we are doing. But I'll write too /
