Here's a thing I worry about when talking about my experiences as a disabled cyclist.
A thread about ableism and cycling:
1/ I use an e-bike to minimize the pain I experience when cycling. I love cycling and have been doing it since I was eleven. When I got my dx and b4 that when I started to have symptoms, I knew that I still wanted to continue.
2/ So I bought the e-bike, and have ridden 500+ miles on it since purchasing it last August.
That being said, being able to afford an e-bike is a privilege.
3/ Which is why I believe that cycling advo instead of being like:
"bikes are cheaper than cars"
should advocate for reducing cost barriers to adaptive bikes. Bc everyone who wants an adaptive bike should be able to get one.
Moreover, just bc I bike does not mean that every disabled person can or wants to.
Yes we need more cycle infrastructure that is inclusive to disabled folx
But also some disabled folks will still need to rely on cars (not up for debate by abled folks)
If you want to talk about cycling and disability, advocate for things like reducing cost barriers, adaptable cycle share, and adaptive cycle education.
Use the word cycle instead of bike.
Don't use the one disabled person you know as a "see all disabled ppl bike"
