ok REASONS WHY YOUR DEPRIVED AMERICAN-RAISED SELF NEEDS TO WATCH THE KDRAMA:

✨ “Crash Landing On You” ✨
u think u know romance?????? equal respect in a heterosexual relationship??? not really. if ur otp is jim and pam from the office then consider yourself deeply deprived of what true partnership looks like
- great cinematography and ooooooof the outfits and color grading like if anything, it’s a well produced work of art
- i’m new to the kdrama structure but the plot is dope and is well balanced with action and love and the humor is A1. it’s a love story but also goes into mental health, family relationships, class differences, corrupt politics (my fav topic heh)
- ok THE SOUNDTRACK is so good. the leitmotifs are PRESENT and u subconsciously start associating diff musical themes with different strands of the plot. the music is a great story telling device and helps weave the plot along. it elevates the show
- the show shows the cultural difference between south and north korea and does a great job in humanizing north koreans. as americans, we’re really used to othering people and this might be the first time i’ve ever even considered soemthing from the pov of a north korean citizen
- the chemistry between every. single. person. is. amazing. ESPECIALLY the camaraderie between the “side” characters. every person has a distinct and solid sense of humor and possesses a really good understanding of physical comedy. it’s TOP NOTCH
- obviously the acting is good. but it’s like u notice in the smallest of their facial expressions or tone of voice. down to like the ways people smile or pout. and the writing stays consistent. no one does anything without u knowing that is part of their personality.
- the female protagonist is one of the best i’ve seen. so many times writers don’t do justice to female characters. this drama has literary cliches but it’s authentic and the female lead, se-ri yoon grows as does the male lead. her own choices and personality drives the story.
- ok my favorite reason (linked with the previous): the relationship dynamic is well written and does justice to how a full relationship should be (even the side characters!!) warning, imma go deep into this
SO MANY heterosexual romantic dynamics in american shows are heavily centered on the male leads. we know how amazing he is, the sacrifices he’s made, why he cares for the woman. but we never see the female lead making the same sacrifices or being shown in the same heroic context.
it’s almost as if it’s enough for a woman (in most us shows and movies) to accept the love from men and not know why she cares. do her thoughts not matter? we know women are amazing but a lot of female characters are never fully explored. even when she’s the main character.
except in cloy, she is!!!!!! se-ri’s motivations and struggles match the male leads’ and it’s so nice to see an equal showing of why each person cares about the other. it’s not just the dude always being selfless. u fall in love with both people.
- for my muslims, I didnt know how alike korean gender dynamics are to ours. I thought I could only find this in period dramas but NAH. it’s refreshing to relate to intellectual and emotional love instead of watching shows focused on physical acts of love that u dont FULLY get
if that’s not enough idk what is. ITS A GOOD SHOW ABOUT LOVE
they aren’t changing the world and yeah, the leads are are conventional attractive. but the writers def have good political awareness and know how to write a good story :)
