I guess I need to make a statement here as I've published the guy in question - Tim Miller - and not by choice, in a charity anthology several years ago. By then he'd already blocked me for suggesting police should be held accountable for their actions (shocker, I know).
He was paid for his contribution (not by me) and was under a six-month signed contract of exclusivity, and yet immediately after publication he published his contribution on Amazon, violating the contract and essentially stealing money from the charities involved.
Since then he's done a 180 on the issue of police brutality (which, full points to him if sincere) and seemed to be championing other social justice issues. When I saw this, I was very suspicious. I figured he must have some *really big* skeletons in his closet, due to the shift.
Lo and behold, it comes to light he's been doing some very nasty things behind the scenes. I'm not gonna say "shocker coming from someone who writes what he does" because that paints the whole extreme horror "community" with the same brush.
Many fantastic people write about awful things. Then there are people like this. Anyway, this is starting to sound like an "I told you so" but I've kept this stuff hidden because I didn't want to ruin his career even though he'd essentially tried to fuck me and my small press.
I'm generally a pretty forgiving person but this stuck with me. I mainly decided not to make an issue of it I think because I saw a couple of photos of him with his wife and kids. I didn't want them to be hurt by his actions. That's not possible in this case, for obvious reasons.
While it's been enlightening to discover he's as much of a scumbag as I assumed, it's also disheartening. I'm not going to use this as an opportunity to chastise an entire swath of people with an errant #DoBetter. The people who require that message won't take it to heart.
I will say it's good when things like this come to light even though it's awful for the victims and the family. Every person outed is one less predator among us (though it seems more pop up everyday). Arrivederci. Don't let the door hit you on the ass on the way out.
There's more I could say but it's not my place to discuss it. And we've all seen wayyyy too much of this guy already today (who's got the eye bleach?). So I'll just leave you with stay well, stay vigilant, stay kind.
