Gerry Brownlee is in no way shape or form a moderate (even without the spying) and has consistently voted to harm women and LGBT people a thread (1/?):
In 2003 he voted against the decriminalisation of prostitution. The Bill enabled women to access ACC and come forward and report assaults without being arrested (2/?)
In 2004 he voted for the overly paternalistic amendment to the Care of Children Act that would require teenage girls to notify their parents before they accessed abortion care services (3/?)
In 2005 he voted for a bill that would clarify marriage as being one man and one woman to try and prevent the courts from reading in LGBT rights to existing legislation (4/?)
Brownlee voted against a Bill presented by the Greens allowing patients to access medicinal marijuana. Around the same time he voted for a referendum on defining marriage as being one man and one woman (5/?)
He voted for the 'Bail Laws', which reverse the burden of proof and required offenders to prove they didn't pose a risk before being released. This detention is horrific (6/?)
In 2004 Brownlee continued his anti-LGBT campaign by voting against civil unions. So not only were gay people not allowed to get married, Brownlee wouldn't even allow them a consolation prize (7/?)
He voted against the Dying with Dignity Bill in 2003 and against the End of Life Choice Bill in 2019, denying people the right to die twice (8/?)
Brownlee voted FOR the three-strikes Bill that would automatically require an offender to be sentenced to the maximum penalty (9/?)
Continuing with his anti-LGBT vendetta, Brownlee voted for marriage conscience, which would allow wedding celebrants and services to deny services to LGBT people (10/?)
In 2005 he voted against the Relationships Bill which would bring civil unions in-line with marriages in terms of legal rights. As LGBT people couldn't get married Brownlee was effectively voting to relegate them to having the rights of a second-class of citizens (11/?)
In 2004 he voted against the Care of Children Act. Name of the Act aside, Brownlee voted to deny children the right to have a say in their lives and the ability to recognise more diverse (including non-Pakeha) family structures (12/?)
Brownlee voted to allow both Auckland and Manukau Councils the right to ban street prostitution, despite it being legal (13/?)
In 2013, he voted against same-sex marriage, denying New Zealand citizens the equal enjoyment of all rights under the law (14/?)
And finally (because I could go on forever and have stuff to do) in 2020 he voted against the legalisation of abortion. This vote means he thinks women and pregnant people should be treated as criminals before they are allowed to access healthcare (15/16)
So, in conclusion, what a guy (16/16).
