i’ve been thinking a lot about the stereotype of edm as just wub wub loud music in relation to what we call kpop noise, but you really can’t hide bad production behind the guise of edm considering 1) the variation within the genre of edm and 2) the difference in audience
this is just an open discussion with myself and others if you’d like, but as someone who’s thoroughly enjoyed edm across the spectrum, i’ve tried to listen to plenty of other kpop acts who produce so called edm and it’s just not the same, theres no artistry in it
for example this guy, he’s a bum and a loser but he’s not wrong in that a lot of groups music seem reminiscent of each other, and in the comments it’s people going “well of course it is, it’s edm” https://twitter.com/lixuxl/status/1282909927858724865?s=21 https://twitter.com/lixuxl/status/1282909927858724865
not specifically targeting OP, but this is an example of people categorising these songs under edm as a way of saying “it’s ok that it’s noise, it’s supposed to be like that” which is frankly insulting to the genre of edm itself
you have so much variety within EDM, whereas a lot of music made by kpop acts nowadays is a parody of the stereotype of hard hitting meaningless trap. gimme some house!! gimme some minimal!!! it’s not wrong to dislike a song but it’s annoying when an entire genre is discredited
difference in audience hmm, i’d wager that a lot of kpop stans who listen to plenty of groups don’t listen to edm outside of kpop on a regular basis, which is perfectly fine!! it’s purely preferential, but then you have people who don’t understand the points of criticism sweeping
away any kind of negative feedback, be it in a constructive manner or not. i guess this is just me complaining that if the genre of edm is to be kpop’s scapegoat, at least make it good, or take the time to differentiate before speaking about things you have no knowledge in
