Thread: So there is a #RoadToJustice march going on today that

- Targets @NYGovCuomo &
- Targets NYS Senators + Assembly Members to pass bills to decarcerate, decriminalize, & shrink the carceral state in NYS. #FreeOurElders #ICEOutofCourts #HALTSolitary #RepealWalkingWhileTrans
I'll start w/ #FreeOurElders aka @RAPPcampaign, who has been organizing for 2 bills to get passed & signed by He Who Must Not Be Named:

Fair & Timely Parole - S497A / A.4346A
Elder Parole - S.2144 / A.9040

Both bills are absolutely critical & must be passed to decarcerate NYS.
Elder Parole ends life imprisonment without parole aka death by incarceration aka State execution by incarceration.

In sum, any individual who is 55 y/o or older & served at least 15 years in prison becomes immediately eligible for parole.

That's ending LWOP & it is BIG.
But what does it mean to end LWOP/death by incarceration if the NYS parole board itself is trash (which it is)? It would mean nothing, which is why Fair & Timely Parole is also critically important.

F&T Parole dramatically reshapes how the Parole Board operates in NYS.
Currently, the Parole Board glances at the conviction for which a person is serving their sentence and incorporates basically nothing else into their parole analysis.

Here is an example of @TishJames perpetuating the "seriousness of the crime" BS: https://twitter.com/RAPPcampaign/status/1282805952002101249
TL;DR: When the State does this, they're basically saying, "no matter who you are, no matter how you have grown or evolved as a human, we do not care, die in a cage."

A life is reduced to a moment in time aka the conviction for which the person is serving a prison sentence.
F&T Parole most critical component is that it creates a "presumption of release" & requires the Parole Board to find a "clearly articulated current public safety reason" to keep a person imprisoned.

AKA they cannot rely solely on the criminal conviction that led to imprisonment.
If you care about abolishing the death penalty, you should care about ending death by incarceration. Point blank period.

The good abolitionist elders (+ @davidgeorge265) at @RAPPCampaign have been putting in the WORK to #FreeOurElders.

Now is the time. We need our elders home.
When people talk about "non-reformist reforms" these bills should come to mind. They were crafted by people who refuse to toss anyone aside. By OG abolitionist elders.

Follow @hamzasaldana614. Support @RAPPcampaign. No more PRISON NURSING HOMES FOR ELDERS! #FreeOurElders!
NEXT: Repealing #WalkingWhileTrans (S2253 / A654).

This is a decriminalization bill - it would repeal NYPL § 240.37 which targets sex workers and trans people who are criminalized for basically existing in this world.

This is NYPL § 240.37: https://codes.findlaw.com/ny/penal-law/pen-sect-240-37.html.
One way to limit the scope of policing is to abolish specific criminal laws aka means to criminalize people aka criminalization.

Repealing #WalkingWhileTrans speaks directly to how criminalization is a perpetrator of violence and has nothing to do with public safety.
To learn more about repealing #WalkingWhileTrans aka NYPL §240.37, read more here:

Senate bill: https://www.nysenate.gov/legislation/bills/2019/s2253

Assembly bill: https://www.nysenate.gov/legislation/bills/2019/a654
P.S. I want even more decriminalization bills. Like I want to put the NYPL through the shredder and I want NYPD to walk into their offices like:
We not gonna need the police if they don't have any laws to enforce............
