Before I moved to England, I used to wonder why people who were born in the UK etc used to claim their heritage and put the flags in their bio. But living here for a while, it makes so much more sense. This country doesn’t want to claim them as British British
They treat them so differently just for being black even if they were born and raised in the UK. If someone asked them where they were from and they said the UK, that would get followed up with “no but where are you FROM from?”
So they claim their West Indian identity and it’s also the identity that they probably feel most connected to since they’ve grown up in households with West Indian parents or grandparents. Plus if you had to pick between claiming Britain or the West Indies, which would you pick?!
I agree that there’s a difference between someone like me who was born and raised in the Caribbean and someone brought up in a whole other country. But I don’t like how you guys treat them on here just because they’re not West Indian by nationality.
I think there’s a lot to be learnt from either side and I must say I feel extremely privileged that my identity is clear cut. Being 100% St Lucian is something I took for granted and I appreciate never having to explain where I’m “FROM from” to anyone
Anyway I just wanted to say that. Imma do a podcast episode on this so you guys can get both sides properly.

And this is just what I’ve learnt from my friends so apologies to any British West Indians who feel like what I said isn’t your situation. I just want us to get along🥺
Side note: West Indian nationals don’t say Caribbeans 😭😭 that’s usually how you guys blow your cover 😂 West Indians or Caribbean people are the only acceptable terms PLEASE!
