During Tulsi Gabbard’s widely shared April 2019 town hall exchange with a young Afghan-American woman, Nahid Fattahi described Tulsi as the “voice for the voiceless.”

It got me thinking about what Tulsi has done to receive & to earn this label.

Here are some examples:
Ferguson, 2014

Tulsi decried the militarized police response to protests, after the shooting of Michael Brown. She condemned the use of military weapons & tactics in American communities.

Today her words resonate in cities across the country following George Floyd’s killing.
Standing Rock

In 2016 Tulsi joined other veterans gathering in solidarity with the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, whose water resources were threatened by the Dakota Access Pipeline construction.

Recently a judge ordered the pipeline emptied, pending an environmental review.
Puerto Rico

In July 2019, Gabbard went to Puerto Rico, to support protesters calling for the resignation of Governor Ricardo Rosselló, amid revelations of profound corruption.

Within weeks Rosselló resigned, while facing impeachment proceedings.
9/11 Families

In Oct 2019, Tulsi went to New York to stand with 9/11 families & survivors. She called on the government to declassify information related to the attacks.

She noted that after 18 years, it is time for Americans to see a 9/11 report without redactions.
Opioids

On NYE, Tulsi joined Chuck Rosa on his daily plunge into the bay at Hampton NH, to bring awareness to the opioid crisis in America. Rosa lost sons Vincent & Domenic to drug overdoses. He started a charity in their memory, & speaks at schools on addiction & recovery.
Vanessa Guillén, 1999 – 2020

On July 1, Tulsi joined Vanessa’s family to demand greater responsiveness to sexual harassment & assault cases in the military. She pledged to honor Vanessa’s life by seeking answers in her killing & by working to prevent similar tragedies.
Regime Change

At the town hall, Ms. Fattahi named the truly voiceless: innocents caught up in conflicts fanned by great powers.

Tulsi’s foreign policy aims to liberate the US from a spiraling arms race, while freeing others from the fear of ongoing wars in their lands.
Voice for the Voiceless

Tulsi’s mission of service began in her youth, with the simple act of clearing trash from the beach. Since then her singular focus has been on serving the unheard by lifting up their voices.

This illustrates the promise of her leadership on our horizon.
