I'm chiming into this CFL Edmonton name crisis.

Of the 4 Inuit land claim regions in Cda, the Inuvialuit Corp position says it does not take exception to the term Esk*mo & that it supports the use of the word ‘as long as it is used in a respectful manner’.
Esk*mo Brotherhood of Canada was formed in 71. An internet search isn’t fruitful, maybe bc ITK Pres had any references deleted? This name changed quickly into Inuit Tapirisat of Canada bc even back then, the terms were antiquated or not relevant to Inuit.
Along the same timeline, there was the Committee for Original Peoples’ Entitlement in the western Arctic, or COPE. COPE turned into the Inuvialuit Final Agreement. Notice any use of the word Esk*mo in the titles or content?
Only 1 quick reference in COPE’s preamble letter to PM Trudeau, 1st pp “…original people known as Inuvialuit, sometimes called Esk*mo or Inuit by others…”.
Personally, I am not offended, but it’s too far of a stretch to support the continued use of the word. I appreciate when some Elders meet me, and they say, “oh you’re Esk*mo [then smile]”, I am not going to educate and correct them.
It is a term that was widely used even by our people who are now very elderly. But it’s time to change the name, it’s antiquated!
Another example, that achieved a name change is the infamous ‘Igloo Tag’ – vouching for authenticity of Inuit art. Some 62 years later in 2017, the Igloo Tag was changed from ‘Esk*mo Art’ to 'Inuit Art'.
FYI, Northern Images & Arctic Cooperatives should update the Igloo Tag reference on their website   http://www.northernimages.ca/Inuit-Art-General-Information/Authenticity-and-Igloo-Tag-for-Inuit---Eskimo-Art.aspx
