Stop censoring us. Understand that anger drives change. History has shown that without anger no one will listen.

🧵Thread on Tone Policing and it's effects on organizers, particularly BIPOC
Tone policing is a tactic used by someone in order to prevent a marginalized individual from telling their story of oppression. It turns away the message by focusing on the emotional state of the oppressed individual as opposed to the actual message itself.
This holds the idea that reason and emotion can not be used in the same statement and that the only time a conversation can be productive is when it is calm. These tactics frequently tie in with gaslighting and other manipulative tactics.

So, stop telling us how we should sound. BIPOC organizers are allowed to feel how they feel, we don't have to make it palatable for you.
- Do not use a person’s emotional state against them in an argument.
- Do not tell somebody to calm down and have a “civil” conversation.
