so gross seeing a load of white, privileged rwcmd students jumping at the oppertunity to bitch about a BLM branch asking a violinist to play for free at a vigil for Elijah (she messaged them first with her website after seeing their post asking for musicians to play)
yeah when she asked about payment and they responded that they could only cover transport costs and the performance would last 10 minutes their tone wasn’t very professional but then to post a screenshot shaming them and opening up a public comment section is fucking foul
it is frustrating to be expected to do things for free all the time as a freelancer and there is a line between helping out where you can and having bills to pay but to have a profile full of shared blm posts but to decline a chance to actively do something in support is not it
and her response I thought was pretty passive aggressive too, not explaining to a newly formed grassroots campaign run by young people why she couldn’t do it and just saying ‘she has bills to pay :)’
imagine organising such an emotional event in the middle of a pandemic and having a white woman centre the conversation around her. the classical music scene is such an elitist, classist one and the demographic in conservatoires is a joke
don’t know where this thread is going but it just irked me so much, surely if you genuinely support blm and marginalised groups who go through so much shit already you wouldn’t open them up to even more of that if they slip up + place yourself, a white person, as the victim?
