Today is going to be an upsetting day for me. As a writer of Japanese descent I really want to review Ghost of Tsushima. I did not get that opportunity and it's deeply hurtful. I knew fairly early on so I've been working on other things but this still hurts.
So here is what I'm going to ask for a lot of people who are friendly with me and perhaps better connected. Advocate for your BIPOC friends and colleagues. Ask yourself "is this something that is best told with my voice?"
Tell your editors "hey I actually think of someone who might be interested and have a unique perspective to bring to this." Tell us when you do that. Help us hold people accountable.
I want to thank @barelyconcealed for trying so diligently to get me a review copy of the game. We've exhausted all avenues so I guess I'm going to have to buy it. I was so exhausted knowing I wouldn't have this chance I asked @StuHorvath to remind me that "timeliness is a curse."
So, like I started, today hurts. Seeing how many publications editors talk about wanting to be inclusive and diverse and then somehow not hearing anything is a shame. It's painful.
I know reviews are not some mythical crown jewel but they get a lot of visibility and that can mean a lot when you're mostly writing on the margins and have something to say. That's why I'm asking you to say something. Help us out. Help me out.
