In light of medical racism, HERE’S A THREAD ON HOW TO AVOID IT! I was surprised to find out that a lot of people just go to any doctor. That is not safe & I can explain why!!! These tips can be used to help you find a good doctor.
1st step is for those who have insurance (I’ll get to the non-insured procedure too) call your insurance company. Number is usually on the back of the card or online. Ask them to email you a list of providers within a 50 mile radius for the doctor you need to see i.e. dentist
If you are non-insured and do not have access to an affluent area I suggest applying to Medicaid or a local insurance. For example, in my area, I see a lot of patients who have MCCP or LCH which are local insurances that give you affordable coverage https://lacomunidadhispana.org
If you are non-insured and have a ride to a wealthy area. Call some offices and ask what services they provide for non-insured ppl. It is very tedious to find an office that may have a helpful program, for example my gyno has a lot of services for free https://www.myvaobgyn.com
Next, for insured and non-insured ppl. After you have found the offices in which you have coverage, now is time to do a little research. THIS STEP IS WELL WORTH IT. Sometimes I take 30 min-1hr to find a good doctor and I am willing/able to travel an hour to them.
DO NOT look at reviews from the office’s website. They obviously choose the best sounding ones. Some reviews have a photo of the doctor (so you may pick a black/female doctor). However, do look at the office website for the doctors blurb. See how long they’ve been working there.
A red flag when it comes to doctors is a doctor that keeps working at difference offices. Usually this is due to them not liking their work environment and switching offices. Some doctors do not like to practice in impoverished areas and move around a lot. Ask urself why...
Another review tip is to find reviews from people who are be similar to you and see how they reviewed the doctor. Implement everything that makes you, you including: race, religion, ethnicity, and sex.
After all ur dedicated research, consider specialties. A lot of ppl go to a doctor who is not well trained in the specialty they need. If u suffer from sleeping issues, go to a primary physician who specializes in insomnia. They’ll refer you to the proper testing.
You can find a doctors specialties in the reviews or by googling their name! Specialties are SO important esp if u do not know what is wrong but know the general area of where ur issues are. I.e. stomach issues. They’re vague & problematic so find a specialist! Not just any doc
Ok and now we are here! I hope you were able to find a good-reviewed doctor that was close to you. Again, I travel far for mine! Now IF YOU ARE BEING MISTREATED, it is time to SPEAK UP. Kindly request a different nurse, doctor, etc. you cannot be denied this request.
How to tell if you are being mistreated:
-they took one part of ur whole story/didn’t listen
-the appt felt rushed
-they tried to convince you ur symptom was nothing (without explanation of why)
-they prescribed u drugs w/out alternatives 1st
-they denied drugs for no good reason
While you’re in the office, note if the doctor is more conservative in their practices. I personally do not like conservative doctors. They stick to the book (the old book). This is not appropriate bc SCIENCE IS ALWAYS CHANGING. Find a progressive doc I am begging you
Also, NORMALIZE GETTING A SECOND AND THIRD OPINION. You know your body the best and doctors make mistakes (whether it’s on purpose or not). Please, if your problem is not resolved in a reasonable time, see !! another !! doctor!!!! Stay safe everyone♥️♥️ End of thread.
