Amy Winehouse passed away on this day 9 years ago, so I finally made a thread of my favorite performances and deep cuts, mostly from her early career. I think some people know about young Amy Winehouse but a lot of people really don’t??? I love her so much ok (THREAD!!!!!!)
First of all, here is her singing Moon River with a jazz orchestra when she was 16.
Like she was a real fucking jazz singer, I need to make that clear!! Don’t get it twisted!! She revered the greats like Dinah Washington, Sarah Vaughan, Billie Holiday, and Donny Hathaway.
In her earliest gigs, she sang with just her and her guitar, jazz chords and all. This is the first known performance of her song “Best Friends, Right?” which was released posthumously on Lioness.
She did a lot of very casual promo performances for ‘Frank’ that proved her vocal chops in the very beginning. To the best of my knowledge she is literally 20 years old here, singing in some random grassy knoll. Queen of grass.
Here is another ‘Take the Box’ clip which happens to be my personal favorite. Like peep the snakeskin pumps at the end omfg. Also when she gets on a real stage with those speakers….goodbye!!
She also performed a number of covers, and she REALLY knew how to turn a song into her own. People know her covers of Teach Me Tonight, Cupid, ‘Round Midnight, etc., but lesser known is this deep cut gem of the Beatles’ “All My Lovin’” that sounds like she literally wrote it.
Speaking of covers, here a great clip of There Is No Greater Love.
Eventually, she began performing with a full band on the Frank tour. The arrangements change in almost every performance, always evolving, can’t even keep track. Here’s one of my favorite versions of ‘I Heard Love Is Blind’
She came alive in front of a band, she was really unlike any other when she was in that zone. Here is ‘You Sent Me Flying’ at New Pop Jazz Festival (I highly recommend this full 40 minute performance on YouTube).
Also here she is in a rehearsal literally sitting on the floor, singing your fave under the table. Some music critics for her first tour said she couldn’t sing. Imagine having bad taste.
Here is another gem where she performs ‘In My Bed’ in the rain at Glastonbury and the camera catches a rainbow. Queen of the gays.
She also did some absolutely bonkers riffs like this one
She was also very funny, both on stage and off. This is the first known (to my knowledge) performanced of ‘Addicted’ years before it came out on Back to Black where she explains the song to the audience and then heckles the sound guy. (This is the full vid it literally cuts off)
There is a lot of intimate footage of her throughout several documentaries taken by her friends early on in her career, and she’s so funny in many of these. People really forget that you’re still a person when you get famous.
Also I just really need to emphasize how GORGEOUS she was. Like wow. Full-bodied, healthy, glowy and happy Amy Winehouse was the blueprint. LOOK AT HER!
I mean LOOK AT HER PLAYING THE GUITAR IN THIS DRESS. Queen of zebra print and florals
To be honest, I am a scholar primarily on Amy Winehouse’s early career. It’s hard to watch some of the footage from later in her career, but I would be remiss if I left some of these out. Here is her cover of “Don’t Go To Strangers” with Paul Weller where she tbh steals the show.
Also here is her cover of Donny Hathaway’s “I Love You More Than You’ll Ever Know,” one of her most iconic performances in my opinion. Donny Hathaway was one of her biggest influences.
Without dwelling too much on her later career, which I could also speak forever about, she was still such an incredible, gracious performer. Here is one of my favorite performances of “Love Is A Losing Game,” from the Mercury Prize Awards. One of a kind.
Lastly, I want to bring it around to her performance of “Stronger Than Me” on Jools Holland. Twitter won’t let me post the full video but it’s one of her best IMO. Yes this song might be problematic or? She’s queen of the gays.
As you can probably tell, I could go on and on forever on different videos and facts about her, but I’m going to leave it here. She is my favorite musician of all time, and the media dehumanized and mocked her until she was gone. RIP Amy
