Thread for recommendations of exciting collections of poetry published when the writers were over 40. Very interested in New Phase poets i.e. those who began later in life. Sell & #39;em to us! (Don& #39;t mind you saying yourself though mentioning another name too would be superlovely!)
As well as Wallace, I& #39;d add to those pictured Pascale Petit (44), Ruth Stone (44), Julia Webb (50), Mark Granier (54), Carole Bromley (56), Fergus Allen (72). Many folk publish their debut after 40 & lots of my most talented students at the OU are in that category. #NeverTooLate
And I wish it didn& #39;t have to be a category! This is in response to what I see as the frequent & #39;othering& #39; of older writers, the silent exclusions that happen not just via the decisions of individuals but at a broader, structural level within literary culture.
(There& #39;s an equal number of young writers whose work I love tho I find it frustrating when words like & #39;new& #39; & & #39;exciting& #39; seem reserved for them only when, as both a creative writing lecturer & prize/competition judge, I see poems that are exactly those things by older writers.)
