I'm reluctant to tweet this because I don't want to give people ideas but hey, it needs saying.
Abled allies, if you hear anyone announce that they are planning to pretend to have a hidden disability to get out of wearing a mask in shops, please make very clear that that's not clever or good. It's bad. It's incredibly insulting. It's damaging. They might not care. Still.
I hope you can at least stop the ones who just assume that everyone around them will applaud their clever idea. Thank you.
Consider that people with hidden disabilities are often at an elevated to high risk from corona. Consider that some (not all, obvs) of them have trouble with masks and wear them anyway. Others really can't wear them and don't need to be seen as cheaters by association.
It's an incredibly awful thing to do and if anyone you know is just plain thoughtless enough to not consider that they're making things even worse for the most vulnerable people, let them know, clearly. Thank you.
Anyone having a laugh getting away with not protecting disabled people by pretending to BE disabled is insulting everyone who is staying home because they cannot wear a mask, everyone who is wearing one while experiencing PTSD or sensory distress and so on.
Stop that and stop it strictly. It is not a victimless prank.
Even before the actual physical risk they add - if they're going to refuse mask wearing, do not let them use the very people they apparently do not care to keep alive, and make it a joke.
End of thread, I think I made my point.
