Later this morning one of @alzheimerssoc's storytellers will be talking to the @CommonsHealth committee about the huge costs her and her husband have faced due to his dementia.
Because there isn't a significant medical intervention for dementia, it is usually 'treated' via the social care system - which isn't free but means-tested. If you have more than £23,350 in assets you must pay for your own care.
This care is often £1000+ per week. On average, people with dementia will pay more than £100,000 towards care during their lifetimes. If they have another medical condition, this will be treated for free under the NHS.
This is what we @alzheimerssoc call the Dementia Penalty and why we urgently need to #FixDementiaCare
Deborah Gray, our storyteller, will be giving evidence to the @CommonsHealth from about 11am and you can watch live here https://parliamentlive.tv/Event/Index/556195a6-e0c2-431e-b2f4-f4dacf64f74f
Correction - Deborah is now on the first panel, so should be on in the next 20 mins or so.
