4 December 1993.
In the 1993 Rajasthan assembly elections neither the BJP or Congress had got a majority. The key to power laid in the hands of 21 Independents and 6 Janata MLAs.
Bhairon Singh Shekhawat was the CM then. (1)
The Congress High-Command, as usually, was delaying in intervening. Prabodh Rawal, the Gujarat Congress Chief, was camping at Khasa kothi, along with Ahmed Patel's friend, Raju Parmar. L K Advani had come from New Delhi. (2)
As the government formation was getting delayed, tension was rising in the pink city. All roads leading to Raj Bhawan were barricaded as Governor, Baliram Bhagat was the target. AICC,after much delay, decided to send Pranab, Bhajan Lal, Rajashekar Reddy, PRD Munshi & Ahmad Bhai (3)
An alarmed Advani and Shekhawat started marching towards the Raj Bhawan, reporters too followed them. At Raj Bhawan, the entry was closed. After some delay, BJP leaders were invited by Bhagat on the first floor of Raj Bhawan. (4)
After an hour, they emerged out with victory sign.Shekhawat directed reporters to come to party office on Ashoka road.He invited them for lunch and narrated the events/ talks that took place in Raj Bhawan. (5)
Bhagat was reluctant to invite Shekhawat even after the claim of written support of the independent MLAs. To quote Shekhawat, "I told him, kuch to khayal karo,ek paon Kabra Mai hai, upar kya jawab doge Bhai Sahib."
The Governor left the room and returned after ten minutes (6)
with the invitation to form the government. The Governor had called up Narasimha Rao (then PM) and after his approval, decided to give Shekhawat a chance". (7)
