Thanks to everyone who contributed to a valuable conversation yesterday about rates of pay in the arts, after which two things seem apparent:
1. Arts leaders, who already do difficult, exhausting and frequently thankless work, should be celebrated and supported during what is undoubtedly the biggest crisis of the last 50 years.
2. At the same time as staff layoffs mount and freelancers, including many brilliant artists, are forced to leave the arts to even survive, we need to talk about ways of ensuring greater equity and a fairer financial distribution across the sector.
Doing so is going to require fraught and uncomfortable conversations about who gets paid what, and as much empathy and understanding as we can manage from everyone involved.
