This is my understanding of what's going on after reading some articles, threads, & watching MZNC's IG Live: SME doesn't pay enough for synchronization rights to the producers who make their songs, so the producer didn't sell sync rights to SME (this is very a brief 1/ https://twitter.com/Koreaboo/status/1282901385827119105
explanation, I'm sure it is more complicated based on whatever was in their contract/ agreement with SME). 2/
So SM artists can still perform these songs & fans can still listen & stream them bc SME has the master rights, but SME can't make money off of distributing the songs via video content bc they don't have the synchronization rights. 3/
Now here is my opinion: I've seen some things on twt calling the producer a d*ck & selfish. But I understand why the producer would want to get proper pay for the work he did, especially with songs that are extremely popular, like Cherry Bomb. He knows both his 4/
own worth & the songs' worth and wants the right amount of pay for his work. Obviously I only know what has been said & released by MZMC's side & not SME's, but SME has a notorious reputation for mistreatment & underpay. 5/
As a fan, I'm irritated bc I love these songs & want to be able to consume visual content that includes them. But ultimately, this is an ownership issue between SME & the producer MZMC. 6/
And unfortunately, it seems like the people who are going to suffer from this dispute are the fans & SM artists who love the songs but have no claims in this copyright battle. *end of my own opinion* 7/
Truthfully, I am not well versed in matters of copyright, so I'm going to share this thread as well: https://twitter.com/JonginsManbun/status/1282906075541323776?s=20
