what i’m hearing (through the grapevine, so take it with a grain of salt) is that LA county public schools are going to be 100% remote learning for the entire 2020-2021 school year and maybe the first half of 2022 as well, unless the federal government steps up in a big way.
even if that decision hasn’t been made yet, it seems pretty likely that’s where we’re headed.

the biggest issue is the additional funding required to test everyone on a regular basis, to hire more teachers to accommodate
lower student / teacher ratios,
to set up and maintain temporary classrooms to prevent overcrowding, to pay for more janitors (and cleaning supplies) to thoroughly clean every classroom multiple times a day, to provide staff with PPE and train them how to use it properly,
to hire people to contact trace any cases that appear.

but beyond that, we also need the federal government to do things like temporarily modify HIPAA laws so parents can know with specificity if their kids have been exposed to people who’ve tested positive
instead of just a general note of ‘your child may have been exposed’; which is the most specific we can get now and tells parents almost nothing they need to know in order to make an informed decision about whether or not to quarantine their kids.
we also need the federal government to do the necessary and vital research about virus transmission between children and to provide guidelines so administrators can know how to handle any of the myriad issues that will assuredly arise, etc.
needless to say, the federal
government is doing none of that; leaving it up to local school administrators who have no real training for this and who are totally out of their depth to make these impossibly complicated decisions.
in the absence of federal funding and guidance, school systems, most of them already cash-strapped and overcrowded, have little choice but to go 100 percent remote. they’re really not qualified to make any other decision.
getting kids back to school should’ve been priority one from the start of the pandemic. we had months to figure this out and plenty of examples from other countries on how to do it right. but the federal
government has utterly failed us. and it’s absolutely infuriating.
