the spanish when they colonized the philippines for more than 300 years and stripped them of their culture: https://twitter.com/shttp_jj/status/1282848093990383617
since we’re here, heres a bit of history lesson. before colonization, filipinos were already advanced. rich in culture. men and women were equal, we had our own writing system, our own mythologies (which is mostly lgbt. they played important roles!) and this is only to name a few
this is baybayin: an old writing system. it’s very broad but imagine this is what we could’ve been using today
feminism: this painting is History of Philippine Medicine by Carlos Francisco. these women healers are called “Babaylan”. they listen and lead the community. their leadership roles are warriors, healers, priestesses and sage
during the colonization, the ideal filipina was someone with purity & innocence. women were taught to be modest & conservative, to act prim & proper (nothing wrong with that), but the ideal woman became someone who is religious (catholic), submissive & obedient to their husbands
now mythology differs from places to places and it’s hard to track its origin, but theres a story about one of the moon gods and the god of death who lived alone on a mountain (Mt Madjaas) many were captivated by their beauty, including death and the sea dragon +
death asked for his praises to be delivered to the moons. one of the moon gods, Libulan, came down to meet the god of death & fell in love. the sea dragon got furious and planned an attacked. death saw the attack and saved the moon god, and they lived on the mountain as husbands
i have to go so thats it for now. might add more stuff later. you may read the replies & quotes for more facts. moarmys follow me! im nice & funny sometimes https://open.spotify.com/album/6mJZTV8lCqnwftYZa94bXS?si=3vc57ZZqQnaULaXyvBkh2A
