It's interesting to me that some of the people I see who are ostensibly concerned w/ economic inequality are also vociferously opposed to means-testing. These two positions are definitely reconcilable, but I don't see many trying to do so. I do see a lot of sloganeering.
If you respond to this w/ a comment about how means-testing is bad vis a vis universality w/out explicitly addressing the inequality question, you are not actually responding to the question I raised.
I am perfectly aware of the arguments for universality over means-testing. My point is that many of these arguments do not address inequality.
It may be true that the best thing we can do in terms of social issues is to offer universal responses. That can lead to less bureaucracy & more public support, theoretically.

Still doesn't address income inequality, however.
