OKAY ATINY AND OTHER PEOPLE AWARE OF THE SITUATION HERE ARE THINGS NOT TO SAY:

- “it’s not his fault”
- “i’m black and i wasn’t offended”
- “they didn’t mean to offend anyone”
- “it’s not a big deal to me”
- “...make a big deal out of it...”
- “just ignore it”
“it’s not his fault”:
you’re babying you’re idol by removing him from a situation that involves him. he can say no. he consented to the hairstyle. our aim is not to drag/insult him, but to let HIM (AND the company) know why it’s wrong. don’t exclude him in your outreach.
“i’m black and i wasnt offended”:
you being black doesn’t make you the spokesperson for black people. if someone else sees it as an issue that directly affects them then it’s important to talk about because their feelings and thoughts are as valid as yours
“they didn’t mean to offend anyone”:
if i cut someone with a knife by accident, it doesn’t change the fact that i cut them with a knife. it can affect how they choose to react but point still holds that we’re trying to prevent that knife cut from happening again
“it’s not a big deal to me”;
again, you are not the spokesperson for black people, and by pushing your narrative you are invalidating others’ thoughts and feelings. obviously the point is not to let everyone know that it happened, but to let the company know that it’s wrong
“don’t make a big deal out of it”:
you are trying to hush people that want to reclaim something. understand that he can do without that hairstyle, understand that him not doing it wouldn’t hurt him, but him doing it hurts others. do NOT hush people, that’s a form of oppression
“it’s appreciation not appropriation”:
some people live in a system where people get fired for wearing their natural hair to a job, and other people flaunting it isnt “appreciation” it’s a slap to the face. let us have it and empower ourselves with it, that isn’t for others to do
