I do interdisciplinary research and learned scientific writing skills from many wonderful mentors who have given me “rules to write by” that I have tried to adopt, but there are a LOT of them. My co-authors sometimss disagree. What do YOU think? A writing rules thread:
Never use “It” or “They”
Never say “very” because it’s very generic, reword instead.
“Since” and “due to” do not mean because/as a result, only use when referring to time.
“In order to” is almost never necessary. Just say “to”
Use an active voice in scientific writing
Never use the word “we” or “I” in scientific writing
Impact is not a verb!
Am I forgetting any!? What writing rules would you add to this thread #AcademicTwitter? #AcademicChatter @OpenAcademics #gradchat #academiclife #ishouldbewriting
