5 signs that you are being groomed into your family's Executive Committee as a young Black person:

1. As a woman, you are the one who reads the list of blanket receivers at Umabo. Huge honour not bestowed just to anyone. The future family disciplinarian.
2. You are designated programme director at family events. The exams to this honour begins at a young age when you are made to read the presents at family weddings and the tombstones at family unveilings.
3. You are trusted with the cold room keys at family events. You have proven to be firm and fair. You are semi-approachable. The eldest uncle/aunt hands down this honour.
4. ALL the elders gossip about each with you. You don't need to call your siblings and cousins to know what is happening in their lives, the tea is always delivered to you piping hot. The future keeper of all family secrets.
5. You are in charge of the FPD (Food Prep Department). This honour handed to you by the EXCO members that used to cook and now are too old to slave away. You are trusted with the shopping list and with the right amount of seasoning and oil in the curry.
