Florida had another record breaking number of #COVID cases today. So here is reality. FL must fully shut down again. We must get the community spread under control. Under these conditions, contact tracing is impossible. We are facing a healthcare crisis. ICUs are filling up.1/5

Whatever economic hit we take, we have no choice. We must put the public’s health and welfare before profits. Also, we need to delay school opening until at least October 1. We can’t put students or anyone involved in their education at risk with out of control spread.2

In late February, I asked @GovRonDeSantis what he was doing to plan for #COVID. Clearly, not enough. But, he has a chance to redeem himself. He can now be the leader that FL needs. Shut FL down to stop community spread, spiking illness and growing deaths. Provide enough testing.3

Then, get the best doctors & scientists across our state to advise Florida on what to do to open back up safely, including our schools. Follow the data. Get contact tracers in place. When our positive cases are down, follow the doctors & scientist advice and open back up slowly.4

I have been really hard on DeSantis. He deserves it. But, with the record breaking covid spike, he can now do what is right. I would love to be able to say that he surprised me, stood up to @realDonaldTrump, & became a true, courageous leader. Floridians need him to do so now.5/5

I watched DeSantis’ press conference today. The heckler spoke the truth & @MayorGimenez recognized that contact tracing is impossible with rampant community spread. Mandatory masks are not enough. If FL wants to limit the spread of illness & death, a shutdown is the only answer.6
