My tweet last night seems to have resonated with the social media community. While it was a one-off because I was so overly tired and frustrated, it became clear that I wasn't alone in how I felt. So, here's a thread on how you can take better care of yourself during this time:
1. Put the phone down. Seriously. I even RTed @feliciapaigexo on Friday about putting the phone away, notifications will be there Monday. Now, did I take that advice? No. Should I have? Oh hell yes.
2. Do something for you. You're constantly checking the brand's accounts, answering questions, helping customers, creating content, etc. etc. etc. Stop. Walk away. Continue that hobby you started during quarantine. Go for a walk. Spend time with family. Get back to you.
3. Ask for help. This is by far the toughest, and in no way, shape or form have I mastered this yet. We're proud of our work. But, it's a lot. Ask for help — from your supervisor, from a coworker, from family and friends. Just do it. We aren't meant to go through life alone.
4. Talk to someone. Seriously, my DMs are always open. I've also been very open in the past about seeing a therapist. It has been one of the best decisions I've ever made. Don't be embarrassed. Your mental health is a top priority.
Are you an employer wondering how you can help your social media manager from burning out?
1. Ask them how they are
2. See how you can help
3. Check in on what they're seeing, and help brainstorm solutions
4. Give them the resources needed to respond efficiently
5. Be a friend
6. Encourage them to take a vacation. While we won't openly admit it, a lot of us are terrified to leave the accounts for more than a day for fear of what we'll come back to. Notifications can get out of control.
Conversations happen. And the thought of missing something important is a real guilt that social media professionals feel. Help normalize taking time to step away in this industry.
