anyone else or just me?
so since people are talking about ways to get work, ile try and give people some suggestions. This is by no means gospel or the only way, but here goes. First of all, PRACTICE drawing/painting as much as possible. Ive said this before but you have to throw yourself at this
If you want to be good enough to compete for jobs, your going to have to put as much as you can into it. Be responsible and look after your health, but working a few nights into the wee hours putting in that work will really pay off
Network as much as possible. through twitter, instagram, artstation, e mail artists you like, e mail companies, ask for feedback from people you follow. Im constantly talking to students and people looking for work. Most pro& #39;s are really approachable and will help if they can
Be humble and listen to feedback from pro& #39;s. They are not being mean if they come across a bit harsh, 99% of the time they are trying to get you to improve. Showing that you can take direction and take criticism is a real plus when working in a team
there is a saying in the industry, dont be a dick! Sounds obvious but you have no idea how many times people are dicks and they have that hanging around their neck. We have friends working in studios all over, and we talk about potential hires, or people to avoid!
this is @gamedevmap see what studios are near you, get in touch about jobs or work placements. Dont wait for job listings, get in touch, ask. sometimes people can just stand out and they may want you.
some more bits on this. Budding concept artists, can you switch style on the fly? can you go from bright, fun and toony one day to dark, gloomy realistic the next?
can you jump onto an established IP/art style and slot in seamlessly? you hardly ever get to work on exactly what you would like too
can you do character designs one day them switch to props, vehicles, hard surface stuff?
this is whats expected of you. Am i the best at this stuff? not even close, but i know enough about each to get by and adapt. Could i do any of this when i started? not really, but with practice you can do it.
i could not get hired a concept artist for years. i was given some aswome advice. worry about that later, get your foot in the door first. For me that was learning 3d. i started as a 3D guy. once i got in, i slowly worked towards my goal.
for some people that may be coming in a designer, a producer, a tester, what ever. concentrate on getting in and getting contacts.
