So shocked and saddened by this news. My heart goes out to Mam Zindzi’s kids and family. To those she loved fiercely and who love her.
For those who don’t know it, one of the defining moments of the 1980s took place when Zindzi Mandela read out a public letter on behalf of her father.
It was 1985 and PW Botha offered to release Nelson Mandela from prison on condition that he repudiate the struggle.
Zindzi was very young and mother had been banished to Brandfordt. She bravely stood in front of a mass meeting of 70,000 people in Jabulani Stadium, Soweto and did her parents and the (then) mighty ANC proud.
She read out these words from Nelson Mandela:
“What freedom am I being offered when my very South African citizenship is not respected? Only free men can negotiate. Prisoners cannot enter into contracts. . . .”
I cannot and will not give any undertaking at a time when I and you, the people, are not free.
Your freedom and mine cannot be separated. I will return.”
Those words - spoken so boldly and powerfully gave black people strength and comfort.
Rest In Peace Mam Zindzi.
