DREAMCATCHER IS RACIST AND PROFITS OFF INDIGENOUS/OJIBWE CULTURE a thread
first of all, i am ojibwe so before you reply telling me to shut up, realize i'm talking about MY culture here and i have every right to be offended. i will not be taking opinions or criticism from non native/ojibwe people.
a common theme i hear from insomnias is "dreamcatcher's concept is nightmares that's why they're called dreamcatcher!" but the purpose of a dreamcatcher isn't to catch bad dreams at all. ojibwe people believe in grandmother spider, who protects our nation, especially our children
we would weave 'webs' around a hoop for our children in order to ensure they're protected by grandmother spider and her web. these webbed hoops are what most people know as dreamcatchers. dreamcatchers are extremely sacred religious items, and they are only to be used by children
there is tradition and spirituality involved in making a dreamcatcher, it's not something you can whip together for an aesthetic. dreamcatchers are ONLY to be used by indigenous people and anyone who is not indigenous and makes use of them is appropriating and mocking our culture
INDIGENOUS PEOPLE WERE NOT ALLOWED TO LEGALLY PRACTICE OUR CULTURE IN CANADA UNTIL 1951 AND IN AMERICA PRACTISING OUR CULTURE WAS ILLEGAL UNTIL 1978! i believe it's important to note that while indigenous people were banned from practising our culture, white people would make and
sell totem poles, dreamcatchers, war bonnets, etc. completely legally. it's not fair for indigenous people to be punished and killed for practising our culture while non natives such as dreamcatcher can use our sacred religious items for a 'concept'. dreamcatcher are grown women,
who are educated on social issues and able to make their own decisions, yet they choose to be ignorant and ignore and harm indigenous people. if you support this group, company or it's members you are contributing to the dehumanization of indigenous people and violent
anti-indigenous racism, and i want nothing to do with you. thanks.
