I spent over an hour today talking with an 81 year old Tex-Mex, his term, man. He speaks English as a second language but was born and spent most of his life in Texas and California. He's been playing rock and ranchero ad a gigging musician since the 60s. 1/
We talked a lot about the Mexican experience living in America. He told me about factories he worked in being raided by La Migra, where only he and four other guys escaped. He told me about his close friend being beaten to death by Migra. 2/
He told me a VFW called him up and booked his band, only to attempt to jump him and slash his tires. He worked 12 hour days seven days a week in one factory for five years straight without a day off. 3/
He told me of being a little boy and being poor but having sheep, cows, chickens, and a bull. He told me about his dad teaching him when he was five or so how to stand your ground if a bull was pawing the ground and might charge. 4/
He was proud to say he would get off those 12 hour days, then go play two gigs before going home and doing it all over again. He told me about drinking beers in the mountains of California with his buddies and fighting, but not too serious. 5/
He told me where he was when JFK was shot, and how Migra came to raid their factory because so many workers were from Texas and they blamed JFK on Texas for dome reason. 6/
That man has lived in America longer than most if not all of you reading this. He and men like him built this country as it is. They deserved better. I told him it's not right. 7/
Postscript: I asked him what kind of music he said Tex-Mex. I said, like ranchero? He said yeah ranchero, cumbia, mariachi, also rock and roll. He seemed impressed when I told him I listen to cumbia.
