How about deaths per capita?
This chart shows the explosion of cases in the past month in Arizona and Florida, two states that had fewer recorded cases and deaths early on in the pandemic:



The story it tells is that the EU’s COVId outbreak was about as horrific as the USA’s was at the start, but they have put a lid on it while USA’s cases have now exploded, with deaths rising a few weeks later.
