There is a lot of talk about the prevalence of hate speech in the present day. But honestly I think that most people are reasonable and yet make mistakes. I don’t think firing “racists” is the best way to help people learn how to express themselves in more pro-social ways. /1
If someone hasn’t had a chance to have their ideas challenged because they are afraid of expressing themselves, or are fired when they do, this is most likely going to engender resentment and not learning. People don’t appreciate that they are “being held accountable” /2
They usually feel victimized. We need to show people how they have more in common than they do different and the only way to do that is through class struggle and solidarity. Bad ideas emerge from social relations defined by exploitation as we have today. /end
