Today we wrap up the Love, Marriage, & Family section of our current (but currently closed) Sisterhood exhibition. Thru photographs, posters, and love letters this section explores the bonds of love, marriage and family through the lens of Black women. #sisterhoodexhibition
In May 1928, 24-year-old May Yancey, a young African-American woman from southern Albemarle County, Virginia, wrote: “My Dearest Sweetheart…you cannot imagine how much I miss you when you leave me… I went to bed and dreamed of you all night.”

This impassioned love letter was addressed to her future husband William Eason. Despite the many struggles of race and gender faced by Black women, these challenges did not prevent them from seeking and finding love. Mary and William eventually married and settled in New Jersey.
