you know another interpretation for this picture could be that the only thing that was (is?) standing Between Them is Mac's religious guilt
so far I have come up with these interpretations, they all have some validity to them:

• Faith: aka trust. they need to rebuild trust between each other in order for the relationship to heal and maybe move forward;
• God's Plan: they are predestined, it is intended for them to be each other's endgame. the episode itself pairs them as such, they are made for each other.

• "God Hole/Golden God": they complete each other and fill each other's void. they are each other's "god" in that sense.
Note: "in your eyes", the song featured in the episode, intentionally features ambiguity between romantic love and love of God.

• Religion as a barrier: Mac's own struggle to come to terms with his identify hindered their relationship and is standing between them now.
It's possible the multiple interpretations were all intended to be true at the same time.
• Resurrection: if you take my death vs love meta into consideration, the Jesus figure can symbolize a man "rising from the dead" to "come back to life".
• Absolution from sin: this might be a little bit of a stretch, but the imagery can symbolize how despite being bad people they are allowed to have this one good thing, each other.
More considerations: the resurrection is considered a "new era" in the bible. and the crucifixion is regarded as "god's plan". all together, they are seen as a form of redemption for all humanity.
Maybe when Dennis said he wanted that "Jesus on the cross" look he meant metaphorically lol
Waiting for Godot, also, has a profound religious interpretation, although never confirmed or disproven. It's cool to see it all intersect, to say the least.
Mac and Dennis could be representing the two thieves crucified at the same time as Jesus, only one of which was saved Because of his belief in jesus. One was skeptic and lacked faith, the other believed him, and he was saved. This story is referenced in Waiting for Godot.
However the two interpretations clash with each other. Either dennis is symbolizing Jesus, and thus will "resurrect", or he's the skeptic thief who lacked faith and was therefore damned (which would mean he does not ever come to terms with his identity).
That's what's fun about analyzing thought, I can get different conclusions depending on how I read what I've been given.
I feel like Mac's dance encouraged them to do more research on religious symbolism in general at the very least, but of course I could be wrong.
now imagine if rcg was going for an "old vs new testament" theme with sunny as a whole (they're not, but imagine)
Like say they wanted to revamp and try new stuff. I wonder. Guess we'll see.
