Today, @AdrianeCarr questioned me if I understood the electricity needs of BC Hydro. Councillor, I work in policy in the wholesale electricity industry and am well aware of the Province's energy needs as we de-carbonize our economy.
. @AdrianeCarr implied that building distributed solar in Vancouver was key to BC future energy needs. As I am the councillor knows, Vancouver has some of the worst solar generation potential in all of Canada. https://www.cer-rec.gc.ca/nrg/ntgrtd/mrkt/snpsht/2018/06-03ctsslrptntl-eng.html
. @AdrianeCarr, as a member of the Green Party, I am sure limiting carbon emissions is at the forefront of every decision you make.
Therefore, you should be well aware that limiting emissions in the built form and building dense transit oriented communities is the best thing Vancouver can do to limit emissions and help mitigate the climate crisis.
Way better than building distributed energy resources in a location with the worst solar potential in Canada (and the Western Interconnection). Nearly anywhere else is better for solar rather than Vancouver.
. @AdrianeCarr, if you are actually concerned about our future electricity needs and how to best de-carbonize the grid, something that is the overwhelming concern of my industry, I would be happy to take this conversation offline to speak to you further.
And in case it wasn’t clear, I wrote this thread because @AdrianeCarr is opposed to a 28 floor transit orientated development because of its shadow and any potential reduction in rooftop solar along the Broadway corridor.
