As we reopen schools (in whatever form that is) can we please stop referring to students as being behind because of Covid-19 and what happened this spring? Expectations of where kids should be at any given time is an adult made construct - we can revise those expectations. (1/4)
Given everything that happened kids are exactly where they should be! Kids across the country are all in the same boat, even those in states who continued on with new learning during quarantine are not drastically ahead of those who didn't. (2/4)
This year's teachers will meet them where they are and we will move forward from there, it's what we do. It is likely that this year will also be different than normal and we will still have to be flexible with expectations. (3/4)
I think the most detrimental thing we can do this year is to tell kids they are behind and put pressure on them to "catch up" to non-pandemic year expectations. (4/4)
