After 3 months of WFH, @TheKenWeb has decided to go fully remote. We decided to give up the lease on our lovely Bangalore office. We don’t see offices being safe places/spaces till Spring 2021 at a minimum. That’s @omarzubair3093 yesterday, on our all-hands title slide today.
We were able to seamlessly transition to WFH since late March because of surpluses we’d unknowingly accumulated over the years. Culture. People. Investments in productivity (MacBooks, Slack, G-Suite etc).
But surpluses can turn into deficits quickly. Which is why we’re now starting a new cycle of investments and thinking into strengthening our advantages in a 100% remote-first setup. Newsrooms are tremendously collaborative, serendipitous and learning environments.
Sustaining the essence of discussions, debates, conversations, ideas, feedback, teamwork etc. in a remote-first environment is hard for most organisations. It’s doubly hard for journalism ones.
