We've recently written about face coverings and mentioned then about exceptions to the rule: https://twitter.com/ParkwoodFriends/status/1277197828788555776?s=20
Here we give some more detail about who is exempt from wearing a face covering, specifically on public transport.

THREAD 1/6
Most people are required to wear a face covering on buses, trains, trams, planes and ferries; it is enforceable by a £100 fine.

However, the following exceptions apply - these people do not necessarily HAVE to wear a face covering, but may choose to do so:

2/6
children under 11 years old

those with a physical or mental illness or impairment, or a disability that means you cannot put on, wear or remove a face covering

those who would experience severe distress by putting a face covering on

3/6
those who are travelling with someone who relies on lip reading

those travelling to avoid injury or harm who do not have a face covering with them

those who need to remove a mask to avoid injury or harm to self or others during a journey

4/6
those needing to eat, drink or take medication during the journey

those needing to prove their identity if asked by a police officer or other official - perhaps to check a railcard

5/6
As you can see, it's quite an extensive list of exceptions! The government is asking us to be sensible. Much like social distancing, this is another area which relies on the majority of us doing what we can to reduce the risk.
